Two Halloween Night Shootings Near Michigan State Injure Five; Police Recover Multiple Guns

East Lansing police are investigating two separate shootings on Halloween night that injured five people near the Michigan State University campus. Three victims were shot near M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street and taken to the hospital, while two more were shot later near Stoddard and Frye Avenues. Most of the injured are listed in stable condition, and police say several people were taken into custody with multiple guns recovered at the second scene.

What remains unanswered is whether the two shootings are connected and whether any victims are MSU students. A university public safety spokesperson said the criminal activity did not take place on MSU’s campus and did not pose a threat to campus. Meanwhile, the East Lansing Fire Department reported 91 incidents in 24 hours, 75 of them on Halloween night, a window into how stretched emergency crews get in a college town on a major holiday.

For Suncoast listeners, the story resonates because our region hosts its own share of college life, from Ringling College to New College of Florida and USF Sarasota-Manatee, plus thousands of seasonal residents returning for the winter. The takeaway isn’t fear, it’s awareness: on crowded holiday nights, check in with family and friends, know your surroundings, and give first responders the space they need. We’ll update this story as police release more details about the investigation.
