More than 30,000 patients nationwide have now received hospital-level care without leaving their homes, and the idea keeps gaining ground. Hospital-at-home programs bring remote monitoring, video visits with doctors, and at least two daily nurse visits right to a patient’s bedroom. More than 350 hospitals offer the model, treating everything from infections to chronic conditions like congestive heart failure and COPD, while freeing up hospital beds for the sickest patients.
The numbers look promising. A 2024 CMS study found lower readmission rates and fewer hospital-acquired infections for patients treated at home, and 85% of participants say they would recommend it to family and friends. With bipartisan support, the federal waiver allowing these programs has been extended through September 2030. Still, questions remain about the burden placed on family caregivers, and Congress has yet to make the program permanent.
For Suncoast communities where retirees and snowbirds fill hospital beds every season, the model could matter more than most places. Patients must live within 30 minutes of the hospital and be stable enough for home monitoring, so eligibility isn’t universal. Would you feel comfortable being treated at home instead of a hospital?
