Florida voters passed Amendment 3 on Tuesday with about 60% support, expanding the homestead exemption and putting a serious dent in local budgets. In Sarasota County, that means a $241 million cut over two years, even as the average homeowner saves roughly $700. Reporter Christian Casale of Suncoast Searchlight noted that many local officials actively campaigned against the measure and still couldn’t stop it.
The ripple effects are starting to come into focus. Manatee County Sheriff Wick Wells told Casale he may have to cut around $20 million from his budget. Libraries, parks, infrastructure and transportation funding are all on the table as counties work out how to make up the difference. Critics, including local officials, describe Amendment 3 as a power grab from Tallahassee that weakens home rule, particularly over land use decisions.
One group left out of the savings entirely: renters and younger residents, who may instead face higher fees as counties look for new revenue. If you own a home on the Suncoast, the savings are real. The question is what happens to the services everyone shares. What would you rather keep: the $700, or your library and park funding? Let us know on our social pages.
