Sarasota County voters reshaped the school board this week. Tuesday’s election moved the board from a 3-2 conservative majority to a 4-1 Democratic advantage, with Beth Mayberry and Megan Tenement winning their races and Heidi Brandt claiming the final vacant seat. Brandt is now the board’s only conservative member.
Brandt isn’t framing her role as opposition for its own sake. She said she’ll continue to represent the portion of the community that may not feel reflected in the new majority, adding that being the minority voice “doesn’t mean a no for everything.” It’s a notable tone from a board member whose vote can no longer decide outcomes alone.
For local families, the stakes are practical. This board oversees budgets, curriculum decisions, and school operations across one of Florida’s largest districts, and a shift this size signals voters wanted a change in direction. The next few meetings will show how the new majority governs and how Brandt’s minority voice shapes the conversation.
