Charlotte County is facing some serious water woes, prompting the Southwest Florida Water Management District to declare a Modified Phase III “Extreme” Water Shortage. The newly enforced restrictions mean residents can only water their lawns once a week and only during specific hours. But the rules don’t stop there—restaurants must now wait for customers to request water before serving it.
While some restaurant owners, like Lee Richardson of Leroy’s, believe that this won’t significantly impact the overarching water situation, patrons are more concerned about wasting resources on water that might not even be consumed. Many diners are agreeing with the new approach, pointing out that it makes sense to serve water only if it’s wanted—after all, nobody needs a glass of water just sitting around, unused.
With these regulations in effect until July, outdoor water usage is being cut back, and the pressure is on for everyone to conserve. The changes can feel a bit drastic, but in the face of a drought, it seems like Charlotte County is ready to get serious about saving water—whether we like it or not. So, are you ready to embrace your inner ‘thirsty customer’ next time you dine out?
