Thirteen students were taken to a local hospital Monday morning after a school bus collision in Ridgeland, Mississippi. The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. at Colony Park Boulevard and Highway 51, according to Ridgeland Police Chief Brian Myers and the Madison County School District. Thirty-two people were on the bus, including 31 students, and additional students were transported to the hospital by their parents. No injuries were reported for the other vehicle involved.
The Madison County School District said its utmost concern is student safety and security, and that staff are working closely with first responders and families. The district is contacting the families of students on the bus directly and working to reunite students with parents and guardians. The severity of the students’ injuries has not been released.
For Suncoast families, the story is a reminder of how much we rely on that daily bus ride and how quickly a normal morning can change. Busy intersections and school zones here at home deserve the same attention, whether you’re driving through Sarasota, Bradenton, or Venice. Have you talked with your kids about bus stop safety this school year?
