James Farthing claimed a $167 million Powerball prize in 2025. Since then, the 51-year-old has been arrested five times, the most recent coming early Sunday morning when Georgetown, Kentucky police found him asleep in a running Ford Mustang parked near a Walmart EV charging station. He was charged with public intoxication and reportedly told officers a woman had driven him there and dropped him off.
The arrests since the win add up quickly: battery and resisting an officer in Florida, an intimidation charge in Scott County, a burglary charge, and a domestic violence charge in July. Each one is a separate case, but together they tell a story about what sudden wealth can and cannot change.
Here on the Suncoast, we love a good lottery fantasy. A place on the water, a boat, spring training seats every March. Farthing’s story doesn’t ruin the dream, but it does remind us that a jackpot pays off debt, not habits. The money arrives once. The person cashing it shows up every day after.
