An upper-level low over west-central Florida keeps scattered to numerous afternoon storms in the forecast through Wednesday, and because these storms are moving slowly, the rain can stack up quickly in urban areas and neighborhoods with poor drainage. Sunday showed exactly how uneven this pattern is: SRQ recorded just 0.22 inches while East Lakewood Ranch picked up 1.16. Keep an eye on street conditions during the afternoon hours, especially around 2 p.m. and later.
The bigger story is what happens Friday night. A cold front pushes south down the peninsula, and behind it comes the driest air we’ve seen in months. Dew points drop into the 60s, which around here is the difference between walking outside and walking into a wet blanket. Expect several days of genuinely comfortable weather, perfect for the beach, the boat, or finally tackling that project in the garage.
One thing you don’t need to worry about: Tropical Storm Fay. It’s sitting about 385 miles southwest of the Azores with 70 mph winds and is expected to weaken into a post-tropical cyclone by midweek.
