Artificial intelligence has moved from boardroom buzzword to ballot-box question. As midterm candidates make their final pitches, political science professor Chris Borick of Lehigh University says AI has become a major campaign issue, with political rhetoric shifting from positive to neutral or even negative in both red and blue states over the past year.
The partisan lines aren’t as simple as you might expect. University of Michigan public policy professor Shobita Parthasarathy says Republicans tend to stay closer to AI companies and focus on cost concerns. But Borick sees potential for real political realignment as conservatives and liberals find common ground opposing data centers in their communities. A recent SEMAFOR poll of Iowa and Ohio voters found most want greater AI regulation.
For Suncoast residents, the data center angle is the one to watch. We’ve spent years debating growth, water, and power, and these facilities sit right in the middle of all three. That makes the AI conversation a local one, not just a Washington one.
