AI Recycling Robot Starts Work in Sarasota, Sorting 60 Picks a Minute

A new kind of worker clocked in Thursday at the Circular Services recycling facility in Sarasota. A Glacier AI-powered robot is now pulling aluminum cans and HDPE plastics, the milk jugs and detergent bottles you toss every week, off the sorting line at up to 60 picks per minute. The plant handles 50 tons per hour of single-stream recycling for Sarasota County and nearby communities, so the odds are good that the robot will eventually touch something that came from your blue bin.

Glacier’s robots are already on the job in Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit and Phoenix, sorting recycling for about 1 in 10 Americans. The Sarasota installation is backed by Cox Enterprises and is designed to keep valuable commodities out of landfills, feed them into domestic supply chains, and create a safer, less grueling work environment on the line. The facility also processes food waste and yard debris into compost and soils. ABC7’s Davis Suppes was scheduled to report after Thursday morning’s ribbon cutting.

For a community built around the Gulf Coast, what happens to our waste matters. Fewer cans in the landfill means more material cycling back into use and fewer trucks hauling it out of state. So the next time you wheel that bin to the curb, you might be feeding the new guy on the line. What would you want to know about the new recycling robot in Sarasota?
