Amendment 3 wants to change what your property tax bill looks like. The measure would exempt the first $250,000 of a home’s value from non-school property taxes, and Gov. Ron DeSantis says that once fully implemented, most homeowners could eventually get two-thirds of their bill back. For Suncoast retirees and snowbirds on fixed incomes, that relief would be real money.
The opposition came to Tallahassee this week in uniform, and it wasn’t partisan. Gadsden County Sheriff Morris Young, a Democrat, and Gulf County Sheriff Mike Harrison, a Republican, both spoke against the amendment. Their argument is simple: property tax money pays for deputies, and less revenue means fewer deputies, which they say creates officer safety issues and stretches response times. A South Walton fire district chief raised similar concerns for emergency services.
What makes this race interesting is the math. Amendment 3 needs 60 percent support to pass, well above the usual simple majority, and polling shows it could break either way. That means every vote from Sarasota to Venice and out to the barrier islands carries weight. Where do you land on this one? Property tax relief or protected public safety funding?
