Giovanni Huerta and Kiah Begaye, both 26, were driving back to their home in Laveen, Arizona, from a holiday weekend visit with family in New Mexico when their vehicle was struck head-on Monday on State Route 260 near Heber-Overgaard. Their sons, Dakota, 4, and Malakai, 2, were in the car with them. All four died. The couple were high school sweethearts who married in April. Huerta worked as a mechanic, and Begaye was building a Native American clothing business.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety has identified the pickup driver as 21-year-old Jesse David Lovato, who was booked on four counts of manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault. A family member says a trooper told them Lovato may have fallen asleep behind the wheel. Investigators have not said impairment was a factor, and the case is still moving through the legal process.
Family members say strangers have already offered help with funeral costs through a GoFundMe, and their message to everyone else is a simple one: take your time on the road. Whether you live here on the Suncoast or you’re a snowbird planning the drive back north, the risks are the same. Drowsy driving, long stretches of highway, and the urge to just get home all add up. Plan breaks, share the wheel, and give yourself more time than you think you need.
