A two-month-old Baltimore girl is dead and both of her parents are jailed, according to charging documents that describe a series of explanations that don’t match the medical evidence. Aida Alvarado was taken unresponsive to Harbor Hospital, where doctors found bruising around her eyes and jawline and could not revive her. An examination later revealed significant head and brain trauma with multiple skull fractures, injuries prosecutors say could not have come from a fall from a bed as the mother initially claimed.
The father, 21-year-old Oscar Pineda, told police a supernatural force or Satan caused the injuries by slamming a door. The mother, 21-year-old Katerin Monzon-Alvarado, blamed the couple’s two-year-old son. Investigators say both parents admitted noticing bruises and vomiting in the days before the baby’s death but did not seek treatment. Both now face child abuse, assault, and reckless endangerment charges, and homicide charges may follow.
Neighbors told reporters the news left them shaken, with one calling it heartbreaking and saying someone needs to be held accountable.
