Two boys are back home after getting lost in a remote rural stretch of Manatee County. Deputies launched a search with help from the sheriff’s office Aviation Unit, scanning from both the air and the ground. Then bloodhound K9 Cane got his nose down and picked up a scent.
Cane led his handler through the brush and, about ten minutes later, found the boys tucked in thick cover. They were safely recovered, and the sheriff’s office credited Cane, his handler, and the other deputies with getting them home. For anyone in our Gulf Coast communities who’s followed search-and-rescue stories, this is a good reminder of what these K9 teams train for, and how fast a good hound can close the gap on a search.
Thick brush in the Florida backcountry isn’t easy to move through, especially for kids who lose their bearings. The quick outcome here came down to coordination: deputies on the ground, an eye in the sky, and a bloodhound who did exactly what he was born to do.
