Buccaneers Drop to 0-3 After Vikings Loss, Mayfield’s Thumb Injury Clouds Week 4

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 0-3 for the first time since 2014 after Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings, and now the biggest question is at quarterback. Minnesota opened the game with a punt return for a touchdown on its first possession, taking a 10-0 lead before Tampa Bay could settle in. Baker Mayfield did find rookie receiver Ted Hurst III for a 40-yard score, but the offense finished the day out of rhythm: 17 of 34 passing, one touchdown, one interception, and six sacks.

Late in the fourth quarter, Mayfield dislocated his right thumb on a desperation throw. Coach Todd Bowles said X-rays came back negative, but an MRI is scheduled for Monday to determine how much time, if any, Mayfield might miss. If he can’t go, the conversation shifts to rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels, who would face a Green Bay defense in Week 4 with the team still searching for its first win of the season.

Bowles was direct about where things stand, saying he’s sure it looks bleak and that it’s not ideal, but the reality is the team has to pull itself out of the hole. For Suncoast football fans, the next few days will be a waiting game, with the MRI result likely deciding the shape of the season. Sunday’s home matchup with the Packers now carries even more weight.

What do you think the Bucs should do at quarterback if Mayfield is sidelined?
