A Cape Coral family is grieving this week after 40-year-old Ian Cain was killed on the shoulder of I-75 in North Port on September 16. Cain had been brake-checked earlier in his drive and pulled over to call his wife, Whitney, at 8:42 p.m. to let her know he was okay and planning to call police before continuing home. Another vehicle struck him on that shoulder. He was a husband and a father of four.
The danger didn’t end with that first crash. As first responders worked the scene, a second driver failed to move over and crashed into a North Port police vehicle, a reminder of how quickly roadside stops can turn into something worse. The Florida Highway Patrol is still investigating both crashes, and charges are pending.
Florida’s Move Over law is straightforward: when you see emergency or service vehicles stopped with lights on, move over a lane if you can, or slow down if you can’t. Ian’s family has a simple request for every driver on the Suncoast, and it echoes what Whitney and his mother Suzi both say: pay attention. He loved his family more than anything, and he just wanted to provide for them. Do you always move over when you see flashing lights on the shoulder, or is it something you’ve let slide?
