Charlotte County deputies fatally shot a 73-year-old man on October 21st after he pointed what appeared to be a firearm at a deputy, according to a sheriff’s official. The chain of events began with a neighbor’s report that Norman Streffling had come onto his property and threatened him and his children with a gun. When deputies arrived at Streffling’s home, he answered the door, went back inside, and returned holding a machete and what looked like a firearm. Investigators later determined the gun was a BB gun.
The sheriff’s office says Streffling pointed the gun at a deputy, prompting Cpl. Troy Gank and DFC Benjamin Keiter to fire. Each deputy fired seven rounds, and Streffling was struck three times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Both deputies are on administrative duty while the investigation proceeds, standard practice in a deadly use-of-force case.
The case raises difficult questions for Gulf Coast communities about how officers respond when a replica gun looks indistinguishable from a real one, and how quickly a neighbor dispute can turn into a life-and-death encounter. No charges or findings have been announced yet. What questions do you think need answering as this investigation moves forward?
