In a surprising shift, Charlotte County Public Schools has announced that starting next school year, only eight schools will continue to offer free meals to all students. This decision comes as the district reassesses its participation in the Community Eligibility Provision program that has provided free breakfast and lunch to students since the aftermath of Hurricane Ian in 2022.
Unfortunately, due to updated federal eligibility requirements, many schools no longer meet the necessary criteria, leaving twelve schools out in the cold this coming year. This means families at those schools will need to navigate the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application process after July 1 to ensure their children have access to affordable meals.
The eight remaining schools in the program include Peace River Elementary School, Baker/Pre-K Center, The Academy, and others. For students at the schools losing the program, it’s a tough pill to swallow, as school lunches can be a vital resource for many families. While it may be time to get inventive with lunchboxes, let’s just hope kids don’t start dreading their midday meal!
