A DoorDash driver in Martinez, Georgia fired three shots at a man Thursday evening after authorities say the man demanded food, shoved him, and then threatened to take his vehicle. The incident happened around 5:41 p.m. near 3830 Washington Road, and the man was taken to the hospital for surgery. Columbia County deputies say the evidence collected so far indicates the driver acted in self-defense, and no charges have been filed while the investigation continues.
According to witnesses, the man approached the driver yelling “buy me a 20 piece” and shoved him when the driver refused. He later opened the passenger door and said he would take the vehicle. The driver retrieved a firearm and told the man he wanted no trouble. When the man went around and lunged through the open driver’s-side door, the driver fired. Deputies described the man as erratic and significantly larger than the driver.
The case is stirring up familiar debates here at home and across the country about self-defense laws, gig worker safety, and how quickly a routine shift can turn dangerous for people delivering food in our communities. Florida’s self-defense statutes are similar in spirit to Georgia’s, which means this scenario could just as easily play out on a street in Sarasota or Bradenton.
What do you think? If you were behind that wheel, would you have done the same thing? Sound off in the comments.
