A sit-down interview between CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz and Gray DC reporter Molly Martinez turned heated this week over the administration’s rural health care record. Oz pointed to $50 billion in rural health funding included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, while Martinez cited a KFF analysis finding the same law cut $137 billion in rural health spending. Oz called that figure “incorrect” and “deliberately duplicitous,” and the exchange quickly became a flashpoint in the broader midterm fight over health care.
The administration frames its approach as fraud prevention and long-term solvency for Medicaid. Critics, including Protect Our Care chair Leslie Dach, say the cuts translate into closed hospitals and lost maternity wards, particularly in small communities that already have limited options. Dach also pushed back on Oz’s suggestion that blue states benefit disproportionately, saying access is equal in 49 states.
For Suncoast residents, the debate may feel distant, but many families here have roots in rural communities up north, and regional hospitals feel the pressure when smaller systems fold. With health care ranking among the top issues for voters, both parties are competing to frame the numbers before the midterms. What questions do you have about how Medicaid changes could affect hospitals near you?
