FEMA has approved more than $116 million for 88 projects across Florida, and a large share is landing right here on the Suncoast. Manatee County leads the way with nearly $44 million for emergency response and the collection of over 1.2 million cubic yards of debris from hurricanes Milton and Debby. Sarasota is set to receive more than $751,000 for storm surge repairs at Indian Beach Park, while North Port gets over $660,000 to cover police costs from Hurricane Ian.
Other counties are getting reimbursed too. Pinellas County receives over $1.8 million for inspections and $840,000 for a storm shelter design in Largo. Lee County gets more than $3.8 million for park repairs and debris removal, and the Pine Island electric co-op picks up nearly $641,000. Statewide, over $46 million will fund elevation, buyout, and rebuilding projects for 62 homes in flood-prone areas, a long-term change that could reshape vulnerable neighborhoods.
For Gulf Coast communities that have spent the past few hurricane seasons digging out, this funding is essentially the bill coming due in our favor. The debris has been hauled, the overtime has been worked, and now the reimbursement is arriving. The question is whether it keeps pace with the next storm season.
