First Alert Weather Day: What You Need to Know About the Tropical Low Hitting the Suncoast Through Monday

SHARE NOW

The Suncoast is bracing for significant weather through at least Monday as a slow-moving tropical low system settles over Florida’s Gulf Coast. The National Hurricane Center has increased the probability of this system organizing into a tropical low to 30%, signaling better organization in forecast models. Already, the region has experienced substantial rainfall, with more than five inches recorded on Anna Maria Island overnight, and a severe storm system impacted Tampa Bay and Pinellas County. Rain chances will remain elevated at 70% through the evening, with pop-up showers and storms capable of developing at nearly any time due to unstable atmospheric conditions.

Residents should take precautions with both weather and travel. Winds are expected to escalate significantly Sunday and Monday, creating dangerous conditions for boating and poor beach conditions throughout the weekend. If you’re planning any water activities, it’s best to postpone them until conditions improve. On the roads, heavy rain is combining with Friday evening rush hour traffic to create slowdowns on major routes. I-75 near Fruitville Road and U.S. 41 heading toward Palmetto are already experiencing delays of 10-12 minutes, so plan ahead and allow extra travel time if you need to be on the road.

This weather system, while disruptive, could also provide meaningful drought relief for the region if rain totals accumulate as expected. Stay informed by monitoring local weather forecasts, check on neighbors and loved ones, and adjust your plans accordingly. Which areas of Sarasota, Manatee, and Hillsborough counties are you in, and have you already felt the impact of the heavy rain?
