Five adults were found dead Friday night at a home on Robin Lane in Douglas, Georgia, in what police are investigating as an apparent murder-suicide. Officers and Coffee County sheriff’s deputies responded to an active shooter call around 11:09 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. According to Douglas Police Chief Brandon Pruitt, four adults were found dead inside the home and a fifth died later at a hospital. One of the victims made the initial call to authorities.

Investigators believe all five were immediate family members who lived together in the Touchton Woods neighborhood. Their identities have not been released, and the bodies will be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for autopsies. Police say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Stories like this land differently in close-knit communities, and that includes ours here on the Suncoast. Whether you’re in Sarasota, Bradenton, Venice, or further up the coast, family violence is a local issue too, not just a headline from somewhere else. If you or someone you know is in an unsafe situation, local crisis and domestic violence resources are available and confidential. The hardest step is often the first call.
