Friendliest Catch Turns 41: 45 Volunteer Boats, 70+ Anglers, One Great Day on Sarasota Bay

The 41st annual Friendliest Catch took over Sarasota Bay this week, with more than 70 anglers with special needs boarding about 45 volunteer boats donated by local captains. Suncoast Charities for Children and the Sarasota Outboard Club organized the event, and participants came from The Haven, Special Olympics, Loveland Center and Sunrise. Captains gave their time, gear and gas to make the morning happen.

Out on the water, every fish caught was released back into the bay, which is fitting for an event where the catch was never really the point. Two-year participant Matthew Tomaino said it best: the joy is in the community and the people around him. Jim Slier, father of participant Justin Slier, noted that it’s not a normal day at The Haven, which is exactly why the outing means so much.

Boats returned to shore for lunch and an awards celebration, greeted by volunteers and local first responders. Forty-one years is a long run for any local tradition, and it’s all powered by neighbors with boats who keep showing up.
