A new Upgraded Points study comparing nine U.S. airlines found Frontier with the youngest average fleet at 4.8 years. Alaska came in second at 9.5 years, and Southwest averaged 11. Frontier’s oldest aircraft was just 11 years old, according to fleet data from Planespotters.net accessed in September 2026.
The age gap carries some real-world benefits. Airbus lists the A320neo as using up to 20 percent less fuel per seat than previous-generation aircraft, and Cirium’s 2025 EmeraldSky review ranked Frontier first for emissions efficiency on intra-North America flying. That said, a fleet-age ranking is a snapshot, not a guarantee that any given flight uses a new jet, and it says nothing about safety, legroom, or amenities.
For Suncoast travelers weighing a Tampa departure, the practical move is pricing the whole trip. Frontier includes one free personal item at 18 by 14 by 8 inches, and larger carry-ons can cost extra. Add seat selection, parking at TPA, and the drive from Sarasota or Bradenton before deciding a fare is a bargain. What’s your go-to strategy for keeping flight costs down?
