Hegseth Impeachment Push Gains Bipartisan Support Days After Midterms

Days after Democrats won back control of the House and Senate, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s future is suddenly in question. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) holds a privileged resolution to impeach Hegseth, and House rules require it be taken up next week. Massie said there’s one contingency in which he won’t reintroduce articles of impeachment: Hegseth resigns.

The pressure isn’t coming from one side. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) publicly criticized Hegseth’s competence and conduct, while President Trump continues to back his defense secretary, saying he’s doing a “very good job.” Hegseth released a video Thursday saying he’s prepared to fight and dismissing the attacks as political theater.

If Hegseth departs, Trump could look to confirm a replacement during the lame-duck session before a Democratic-controlled Senate makes confirmation far harder in January. That tight window puts Pentagon leadership squarely in the spotlight as Congress flips.
