Hiker Found Dead at Abrams Falls: What His Family Wants Suncoast Swimmers and Hikers to Know

A 24-year-old hiker named Sahil Jilani disappeared in Great Smoky Mountains National Park last Monday after his phone location sharing stopped inside a cellular dead zone. His car was found Wednesday at the Abrams Falls trailhead, and divers recovered his body from the water at the falls the next day. His phone, keys, and clothes were found near the water, and his family believes he drowned after being caught in powerful currents near the waterfall.

His sister, Asma Jilani Bustamante, described him as a pure, kind, generous soul who always cared for others. His mother is hospitalized following his death. The family is now raising funds to return his body to Houston and to promote water safety awareness in his memory, and their message is direct: heed the warning signs, especially where lives have been lost, because beauty can turn deadly in an instant.

For those of us on the Suncoast, this story lands right at home. From the Gulf beaches to the passes and the rocks around our jetties, our water is beautiful and it is powerful, and it does not care how strong a swimmer you are. Tell someone your plans, read the posted warnings, check the surf and rip current forecasts, and consider carrying a satellite communicator for hikes in areas where cell service drops off.
