An explosion at the Loveland chemical facility in Greenville, Mississippi, just after 7 a.m. Wednesday sent thick smoke into the air and triggered a shelter-in-place order for the surrounding area. The blast involved a chemical herbicide stored inside a hot box, according to officials. Firefighters contained the flames and went through decontamination for potential chemical exposure. No injuries were reported, the shelter-in-place order was later lifted, and the cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
Mayor Errick Simmons praised the multi-agency response and asked residents to stay calm, avoid the area, and give emergency crews room to work. Washington County emergency officials coordinated with Greenville firefighters and other responding agencies throughout the morning.
For Suncoast residents, the incident is a reminder that emergency orders can arrive with little warning. We know the drill for hurricanes and red tide, and a shelter-in-place order follows the same principle: get inside, close up, stay informed, and wait for official word. If you haven’t reviewed your household emergency plan, this week is a good time. Do you know what a shelter-in-place order would mean for your home?
