Nashville DoorDash Ambush Kills 22-Year-Old, Critically Wounds 14-Year-Old Brother: What Suncoast Gig Workers Should Know

A delivery run near Nashville turned deadly Thursday night when three men ambushed a car in the parking lot of Birchstone Village Apartments. Metro Nashville police say 22-year-old Jhon Diaz Santos was killed and his 14-year-old brother Alan was shot in the head and remains in critical condition. Their father, Juan Díaz, told reporters the brothers had made DoorDash deliveries together many times without any sign of trouble. Santos tried to escape but backed his car into a fence before all three suspects fled.

The shooting hits home for the thousands of gig workers across the Suncoast who drive for delivery apps, often late at night and often alone. Many in our beach communities rely on that income, whether it’s a retiree supplementing Social Security or a family juggling two jobs. The case also raises familiar questions about driver safety, drop-off locations, and how much protection app companies owe the people who keep their wheels turning.

Police say they are following several leads, but no arrests have been announced and the three suspects remain at large. Anyone with information is urged to contact Metro Nashville Police. In the meantime, families here are thinking about one father’s words: he said he never imagined a loss this size. Have you or someone you love ever worked a delivery shift alone at night?
