New College of Florida has a fresh bragging right for the Suncoast. Niche’s 2027 rankings placed the Sarasota public honors college at No. 1 among liberal arts colleges in Florida, with additional showings at No. 3 among small Florida colleges, No. 9 among Florida public universities, No. 12 statewide overall, and No. 59 nationally among liberal arts colleges. Niche also gave the school a B+ overall grade, with A marks in academics, diversity and professors.
This year’s rankings added a new wrinkle: an Institutional Success Score that counts for 5% of a school’s total. The Forbes 2027 lists offered more validation, with New College at No. 80 among Southern colleges and No. 82 among public colleges nationwide. President Richard Corcoran said the college doesn’t chase rankings, but rather excellence, calling the results a byproduct of an institution that demands the best from its students and faculty.
For families across our Gulf Coast communities, rankings like these often shape where prospective students apply and how they size up Florida’s public honors college model. Whether the numbers sway you or not, it’s a notable moment for a hometown institution with a national profile. What mattered most to you when choosing a college, the rankings or the campus feel?
