For decades, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, has been a diagnosis reserved for the deceased. The brain disease, linked to repeated head trauma, could only be confirmed during an autopsy. A sobering study from Boston University found that 315 of 338 deceased former NFL players had CTE. But that reality is about to change, thanks to a breakthrough in nuclear medicine. New PET imaging technology can now detect abnormal tau protein buildup in living brains, the unmistakable marker of CTE.
Researchers are optimistic that the FDA will approve this imaging within two years. Dr. Esma Akin, a radiologist at George Washington University Hospital, described the process as a “magic bullet” that accumulates in the crevices of a living patient’s brain. Once approved, this could open the door to clinical trials focused on treatment, not just diagnosis. Dr. Mike Alosco from Boston University says identifying the disease in living patients is the essential first step toward designing therapies for those who might have CTE.
This matters for more than just pro football players. Veterans who’ve experienced blast exposures, domestic violence survivors, and anyone in contact sports face similar risks.
