Over 100 Pounds of Unused Meds Collected in Manatee County: Why That Cabinet Clean-Out Matters

SHARE NOW

Manatee County residents cleared out more than 100 pounds of unused prescription medication during Saturday’s take-back event, part of HCA Healthcare’s annual Crush the Crisis initiative. HCA Florida Blake Hospital and HCA Florida Braden River Emergency hosted the collection alongside Bradenton Police and the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, offering a safe and anonymous way to dispose of leftover prescriptions from surgeries and other medical visits.

The purpose is straightforward. Old pill bottles tucked into a medicine cabinet are one of the most common starting points for prescription misuse, especially when friends or family members know where to look. Turning those medications in removes the risk without any questions asked, and since 2019, Crush the Crisis events have disposed of more than 88,000 pounds of medication nationwide.

There’s encouraging news on the broader front as well. CDC data shows national overdose deaths declined in 2025, but prescription misuse remains a public health concern, which is why local prevention efforts keep going. Missed the event? Watch for the next take-back day, and remember not to flush or trash old medications in the meantime.
