A 21-year-old Palmetto man has pleaded guilty to a federal charge after admitting he bought a handgun for a juvenile. Desmin Terrell Belvin Jr. walked into a Bradenton gun store on March 21st and purchased a Glock, signing a federal form that certified he was the actual buyer. Prosecutors say he handed the gun to a minor immediately after leaving the store, the classic definition of a straw purchase.
Straw purchases are illegal because they bypass the background check system designed to keep firearms out of the hands of people who can’t legally buy them, including minors. The case was investigated jointly by the ATF, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the Palmetto Police Department as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a Department of Justice initiative that targets gun violence through coordinated federal and local enforcement.
Belvin now faces up to 10 years in federal prison. His sentencing date has not yet been scheduled. This case serves as a reminder that law enforcement agencies across the Suncoast are actively tracing firearm sales and holding buyers accountable when they misrepresent who the gun is really for.
