A Friday night at the Spirit Halloween store inside Solano Town Center in Fairfield, California, turned deadly when gunfire broke out around 8:30 p.m. A pregnant woman, 31-year-old Constance Hages, was killed, and six other people were wounded, including four men between the ages of 16 and 32. Three of them remain in critical condition. Police say the shooting was targeted and involved a single suspect, who has not been arrested. The FBI’s Sacramento office is assisting the investigation.
The mall stayed open, but its planned trick-or-treating event was canceled, a decision that reflects how unsettling this is for a community on Halloween weekend. Fairfield police acknowledged as much, saying an incident like this is frightening and deeply unsettling. Detectives are reviewing video and other evidence as they work to identify the suspect.
For those of us here on the Suncoast, the story is a reminder to stay aware during the busy fall events ahead, from beachside festivals to neighborhood trick-or-treat nights. If you see something that doesn’t sit right, report it. What do you do to keep your family safe at crowded community events?
