Drew Rasmussen was seven and two-thirds innings into a no-hitter when Austin Wells doubled to right, and just like that, one of the most electric playoff nights in recent Suncoast memory came down to a single swing. Rasmussen struck out ten and walked two, retiring fifteen straight Yankees at one point, while Jonathan Aranda’s third-inning home run off Gerrit Cole stood up as the only run of the game. The Rays took Game 1 of the AL Division Series, 1-0.
Wells wasn’t done making headlines. After the double, he ran through the stop sign at third base and was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple, ending the inning and any momentum New York might have built. The bigger story for the Yankees is Aaron Judge, who sat out with a calf injury. Without him in the lineup, New York managed exactly one hit against a Rays pitching staff that looked completely in control.
Only three no-hitters have ever been thrown in postseason history, which tells you how close Rasmussen came to joining a very short list. The Rays now hold a 1-0 series lead, with the question shifting to whether New York can find any offensive spark if Judge remains sidelined. What was your reaction when Wells broke up the no-hitter?
