Riverview High Teen Charged with School Threat, Accused of Framing Ex-Boyfriend Using AI-Altered Post

A 15-year-old student at Riverview High School has been arrested and charged after investigators say she threatened a shooting at the school, then tried to make it look like the threat came from her ex-boyfriend. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, she sent an email containing a screenshot of an Instagram post that appeared to be from the male student. Detectives determined that the post was not his and that the image had been altered with artificial intelligence before it was sent.

The ex-boyfriend was interviewed and fully cleared before investigators traced the email back to his ex-girlfriend. The sheriff’s office said the girl admitted to sending the email and knew the image had been altered. She now faces charges including written or electronic threat to conduct a mass shooting, unlawful use of a two-way communications device, and disrupting a school campus.

For families around Riverview and the greater Suncoast, the case raises two uncomfortable questions. First, how quickly AI can turn a fake message into something that looks completely real. Second, what the consequences should be when a student uses that to threaten a campus and destroy someone else’s reputation. This story is still moving through the legal process, but it’s a strong reminder to talk with the kids in your life about what they share, what AI can do, and how fast a bad decision can change everything. What do you think schools should be doing about this? Let us know.
