School meal prices are going up this fall in both Sarasota and Manatee counties, following a nationwide trend driven by higher food costs and lower federal reimbursements. Manatee County is raising lunch prices by 25 cents for elementary students and 15 cents for secondary students. Sarasota County is making bigger changes, increasing high school lunch to $4.15 right away and then to $4.40 in January. Breakfast prices in Sarasota rise 25 cents to $2.50, while Manatee is keeping breakfast free for all students.
District officials say the increases are unavoidable. Federal reimbursements have declined as fewer families qualify for free or reduced-price meals, leaving districts to absorb rising food service costs. Regina Thoma, Director of Food and Nutrition Services for Manatee County, said the district had to find ways to stay afloat as purchasing costs climbed. Sarasota School Board member Tom Edwards has echoed similar concerns about balancing budgets without putting too much strain on families.
