Sarasota Breaks Ground on 20-Unit Housing Community for Foster Youth Aging Out of Care

Construction is officially underway on a supportive housing community in Sarasota designed for young adults aging out of foster care. The project will bring 20 units across five homes to the area, giving former foster youth a stable place to land as they transition into adulthood. For many of these young people, turning 18 means losing housing support overnight, often while they are still finishing high school.

That was the reality for Isaac Cedeno, who entered foster care at age 9 and had to figure out housing on his own at 18. He shared his story at the groundbreaking, describing a stretch of time when he was living with a roommate, attending high school, and juggling far too much at once. His experience is exactly what this project aims to prevent for the next wave of young adults leaving the system.

The funding came together thanks to the Junior League of Sarasota, whose 2025 campaign raised about $210,000 to furnish each home with new furniture, appliances, and home goods. Organizers with Community Assisted and Supported Living say the full cost is now covered. It’s a local reminder that safe, stable housing can be the difference between a young person finishing school and starting a career, or falling through the cracks.
