A night that started with a wait in a Sarasota McDonald’s drive-thru ended with nine shots fired into the air, a witness tailing the gunman for his license plate, and a standoff that left 39-year-old Casey King hospitalized and facing multiple counts of attempted second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer.
According to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office, witness Ana Hernandez called 911 as King got out of his car and fired. She and her husband followed his white vehicle long enough to capture the plate, then returned when dispatch instructed them. Hernandez later said she couldn’t let someone believe shooting in the middle of the night, without provocation, was acceptable. Deputies traced King to a home on Hoyer Drive, where he refused commands to come out, barricaded himself, and fired from inside before a deputy shot and hit him. A woman inside the home had also called 911.
The investigation remains active, and the case is raising questions about drive-thru rage, gun violence, and what role bystanders should play during an active threat. The standard advice from law enforcement is to be a good witness rather than a hero, yet the license plate in this case proved critical. What would you have done in that drive-thru line?
