Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is making a major move into Manatee County. Its governing board approved purchasing roughly 120 acres near State Road 64 and Interstate 75 for nearly $60 million, land that could one day hold a full medical campus. The deal isn’t final. It depends on Manatee County officials approving rezoning and working out development agreements, and no timeline has been announced for construction or an opening.
The numbers explain the interest. More than 185,000 Manatee County residents received care from Sarasota Memorial in 2025, about 25% of the system’s total patient volume, and the Sarasota campus frequently runs at or near capacity. If the project moves ahead, a freestanding emergency department could come first on a separate 10-acre parcel with direct SR 64 access, which was approved back in July. Later phases could add physician offices, pediatric specialty care, imaging, lab services, and possibly a full-service hospital.
All of this is happening against a backdrop of serious regional growth. The area’s population is projected to climb from 1.2 million to nearly 1.8 million over the next 25 years. CEO David Verinder framed the purchase as long-range planning in the tradition of the system’s century of service.
