Sarasota Police Take Over Parking Operations: What Changes for Drivers

Sarasota’s parking operations have a new home. As of Wednesday, the police department oversees city parking, with Parking Services now sitting under the Patrol Division. Parking enforcement employees are being called Parking Ambassadors, and they’ll continue enforcing the rules while helping residents, businesses and visitors get around downtown and the barrier islands.

The department says the move is about safety and service. Ambassadors often work alone in streets and garages, so they’re getting additional communication resources, field support and de-escalation training. It also lets officers request parking assistance so they can stay focused on patrol duties. Uniforms and equipment will update gradually, and body-worn cameras are among the options under evaluation, though nothing has been announced.

For anyone who parks in Sarasota, the practical details are the same: payments, permits and customer service remain at the One Stop Shop at 1575 Second St., and phone and email contacts haven’t changed. Chief Rex Troche noted this isn’t a first, since the department has absorbed parking operations four times previously. Have you noticed a difference downtown yet? Let us know.
