A predawn search warrant on Old Bradenton Road on September 2nd ended with Sarasota police seizing 45.5 grams of crack cocaine, 56.1 grams of powder cocaine, morphine sulfate pills, buprenorphine-naloxone tablets, and $793 in cash, along with scales, razors, and plastic bags bearing cocaine residue. The operation began with a tip from the public, which prompted detectives to move early on the home. Fifty-eight-year-old Lashay A. Smith was arrested at the scene and taken to Sarasota County Jail.
Smith faces felony trafficking and possession charges along with two misdemeanors, and was released after posting a $26,000 bond. Sarasota police records also note a lengthy criminal history: 14 prior felony convictions, among them drug-sale and drug-possession offenses. That history is likely to shape the way the case moves through the courts, and it raises familiar questions about how bail decisions work for repeat offenders.
