A Sarasota club is proving that the best nights out don’t have to be loud. Quiet Reading Club brings readers together for a simple format: 30 minutes of socializing, followed by a full hour of silent reading. No assigned book, no discussion questions, no homework. Co-founders Isabelle Blanch and Katie Sturkey built it as a true third space, a place that isn’t home or work where people can simply be together without pressure.
The response has been bigger than anyone expected. Word of mouth and social media pushed one host venue past its comfortable capacity, and the club is now expanding to twice-monthly meetups to keep up with demand. Calusa Brewing general manager Bernie Dieseldorff has watched the crowds arrive, and members like Heaven Weaver and Cyndahl say the appeal goes beyond books. People are making friends and finding community they might not have found anywhere else on the Suncoast.
Silent book clubs are popping up nationwide, and it’s easy to see why, especially for introverts, retirees, and anyone who wants a calmer social option than a packed bar. Upcoming dates and locations are posted on Instagram at @quietreadingclub. Would you try a silent book club, or does the quiet hour sound too long to sit still?
