Sassy Seniors Log 4,000 Service Hours in Year One, and the Suncoast Is Watching

A group of Las Vegas women called the Sassy Seniors has logged 4,000 community service hours in its first year, and the formula is refreshingly simple. Founder Kathy Yanke recruited about a dozen women who rotate through events across the valley in pink outfits with pom-poms, supporting veterans, joining highway and community cleanups, and working with the Red Cross on heart health efforts. One member repurposes old wedding dresses for babies born sleeping, drawing on her own experience with infant loss.

The group’s next chapter takes them to Hawaii for a Pearl Harbor Day anniversary event honoring WWII veterans. Membership is open to women generally 50 and older who can attend Tuesday night meetings and commit to at least 10 hours of service per month.

For those of us here on the Suncoast, the takeaway is hard to miss. Between our veterans community, hurricane recovery efforts, red tide awareness, and the neighbors who need a hand after storm season, there is no shortage of places a group like this could plug in. Retirement here comes with time and talent, and the Sassy Seniors show what happens when someone finally organizes it. So we want to know: what cause here in our Gulf Coast communities would you volunteer for every week?
