An early Saturday morning crash on I-75 southbound near mile marker 158 sent one person to the hospital by air. Charlotte County Fire & EMS responded to the scene in the Tucker’s Grade area around 5:45 a.m. after a semi-truck and a passenger vehicle collided. One occupant was trapped inside the wreckage, and crews from Engine 7, Squad 12, and Rescue 32 spent roughly 30 minutes working to free them.
An Aeromed medical helicopter landed directly on the interstate to airlift the patient as a trauma alert. After extrication, fire and EMS crews treated the patient on scene alongside the Aeromed team before the flight. Engine 6 also responded to contain an estimated 20 to 40 gallons of oil that leaked onto the roadway from the crash.
The crash serves as a reminder of just how much commercial truck traffic moves through this corridor every day, and how quickly a routine drive can turn dangerous. The Tucker’s Grade stretch of I-75 is a familiar route for Charlotte County commuters, seasonal residents, and anyone headed to or from Southwest Florida. While traffic impacts from the morning incident have since cleared, the response highlights the coordination required when an air ambulance has to land on a busy interstate.
