Sen. Mark Kelly, the Arizona Democrat and former astronaut, introduced the Make AI Work for Americans Act this week, a bill that would require companies benefiting most from artificial intelligence to invest in workers and pay their fair share. Kelly says estimates suggest millions of Americans could lose their jobs to AI, and he wants Congress to act before that happens rather than after.
The proposal arrived the same week President Trump hosted top tech leaders at the White House to praise what he calls “super intelligence.” Kelly argues that AI needs strict guardrails and should not depend on companies policing themselves, comparing the urgency to a master alarm in a space shuttle cockpit.
For Suncoast communities, the stakes are closer than they might seem. Tourism, hospitality, insurance, and small business services up and down the Gulf Coast all use tools that are getting smarter every month. Whether you are retired, working seasonally, or running a shop on Main Street, the question of who protects workers during this transition is worth paying attention to.
So what do you think? Should companies that profit from AI be required to invest in the workers it displaces? Let us know in the comments.
