Doug Benefield was killed in Sarasota County on September 27, 2020, in a case the country came to know as the “Black Swan” murder. Six years later, his daughter Eva is making sure people remember who he was before the trial coverage started. He was a Navy pilot, an artist, a runner, and the kind of man who once pulled over to help a stranger change a tire.
In the years since his death, Eva found hundreds of photos of her father’s life. She started sharing her grief on TikTok, where a community formed around her honesty. That audience, and that healing, led to her new memoir, “Surviving the Black Swan Murder,” which became a New York Times bestseller in its first week.
Eva now runs near Sullivan’s Island, where her father’s ashes were scattered. She paints. She owns a clothing brand called Ghost Cowboy, built around her own artwork. Her father used to tell her “Good job, Pumpkin.” These days, she’s the one saying it to herself.
