If you’ve noticed more of your neighbors talking about Allegiant Air lately, you’re not imagining it. The ultra-low-cost carrier has quietly become the go-to airline for Suncoast travelers—and the numbers back it up.
Here’s what’s happening: Allegiant connects the places people in Sarasota, Bradenton, St. Pete, and Clearwater actually want to go. Instead of funneling everyone through massive hub airports in Atlanta, Charlotte, or Orlando, the airline operates nonstop flights from smaller regional airports like Sarasota Bradenton International Airport and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport to mid-size cities across the Midwest, Northeast, and Southeast. That’s a game-changer for a region packed with retirees visiting family back home, seasonal residents splitting time between Florida and smaller hometowns, and families who just want a direct flight without the headache.
The growth speaks for itself. Sarasota Bradenton International Airport finished 2025 with more than 4.5 million passengers—the busiest year in the airport’s history. A big chunk of that momentum came from Allegiant’s expansion. In 2025 alone, the airline launched service to seven new destinations from SRQ, with one-way fares starting as low as $39. By February 2026, Allegiant was adding Rochester, New York to the roster. Meanwhile, St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport—where Allegiant is the primary carrier—handled nearly 2.8 million passengers in 2025 and now offers 63 nonstop destinations, with three new Allegiant routes added in early 2026 to Atlantic City, Trenton, and Huntsville.
So what’s the real draw? It’s the combination of direct flights, lower base fares, and the simple convenience of a smaller airport experience. SRQ and PIE are easier to navigate than sprawling hubs—shorter walks, simpler terminals, closer parking. That matters whether you’re traveling with kids, managing a wheelchair, or just tired of airport stress. For price-conscious travelers willing to pack light and plan ahead, Allegiant can be genuinely affordable. Just know what you’re getting: ultra-low-cost means add-ons like checked bags, carry-ons, seat selection, and priority boarding can quickly change your final bill.
The ripple effect extends beyond just convenience. Every nonstop flight into SRQ, PIE, Punta Gorda, or Fort Myers brings tourists who spend money at local hotels, restaurants, shops, and attractions. Visitors landing at Sarasota-Bradenton are minutes from Siesta Key, Longboat Key, and Anna Maria Island. Those flying into PIE are close to Clearwater Beach, downtown St. Petersburg, and Safety Harbor. That’s real economic impact for a region built on tourism.
There’s a trade-off worth considering, though. Many Allegiant routes operate only a few days per week, and some are seasonal. If a flight gets canceled or delayed, the next nonstop might not arrive until days later. Schedule changes happen regularly in the low-cost airline world. But for the travelers who understand the model—pack light, book strategically, compare total costs, not just base fares—Allegiant has become the shortcut they check first.
