Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks, Suncoast communities came together Friday for a day of remembrance that stretched from Venice to Palmetto. Hundreds gathered at Patriots Park in Venice for speeches and music, where a resident with a deeply personal connection to the attacks spoke about a cousin who was one of the pilots of the planes that struck the World Trade Center. Venice’s fire chief and police chief stood alongside veterans, first responders, and neighbors who filled the park.
In Sarasota, more than 500 people took part in an inaugural stair climb at Nathan Benderson Park, an event organizers say exceeded every expectation and carried a message of suicide prevention awareness alongside its 9/11 tribute. Palmetto’s ceremony, led by the Boys and Girls Club of Manatee County, featured Sandra Kay Daniels, the teacher who was with President George W. Bush when he learned of the attacks. State College of Florida hosted retired Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer 4 John Phillips, and Bradenton held its own observance as the region joined national ceremonies in New York City, the Pentagon, and Pennsylvania.
