The Suncoast is trading one weather problem for another this week. After months of dry conditions, tropical moisture is settling in over Sarasota and the surrounding Gulf Coast communities, bringing daily chances of heavy downpours from Monday through Saturday. The National Weather Service has already declared Monday a First Alert Weather Day, with localized street flooding and ponding on roadways possible during the afternoon and evening hours.
The remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly are expected to arrive mid-week, adding even more moisture to an already saturated setup. While neither Dolly’s remnants nor a separate low-pressure system in the northern Gulf currently pose a tropical storm or hurricane threat to the Suncoast, the rainfall totals are the real story here. Areas near the bay, canals, and low-lying beach communities could see water creep onto roads, especially during high tide cycles. Boaters should also stay weather-aware, as thunderstorms could produce wind gusts near 50 mph.
On the bright side, this rain is a much-needed boost for the region after a dry stretch. Lawns, gardens, and area waterways will benefit from the soak. Just remember to slow down on wet roads, give yourself extra time for commutes, and keep an eye on the radar if you have outdoor plans this week.
